Install the extension

The extension installs from your browser’s own store. Pick your browser below. You need your Shifter API key from your profile for the last step.

Chrome, Brave, Opera

1. Open the Chrome Web Store page

   Go to Shifter on the Chrome Web Store. Brave and Opera install Chrome extensions from the same page.

2. Add it to your browser

   Click Add to Chrome, then confirm with Add extension. If Opera first asks to allow extensions from the Chrome Web Store, accept it.

3. Pin it to the toolbar

   Open the extensions menu (the puzzle piece icon next to the address bar) and click the pin next to Shifter, so the icon stays visible.

4. Paste your API key

   Click the Shifter icon, copy your API key from your Shifter profile and paste it in. See Using the extension for what comes next.

Firefox

1. Open the Firefox Add-ons page

   Go to Shifter on Firefox Add-ons. It works in Firefox on desktop.

2. Add it to Firefox

   Click Add to Firefox, then confirm with Add.

3. Pin it to the toolbar

   Open the extensions menu (the puzzle piece icon in the toolbar), click the gear next to Shifter and choose Pin to Toolbar.

4. Paste your API key

   Click the Shifter icon, copy your API key from your Shifter profile and paste it in. See Using the extension for what comes next.

Supported browsers

The extension is available for Chrome (including Brave and Opera) and Firefox on desktop. Microsoft Edge and Safari are not supported.

Private windows

Browsers keep extensions out of private windows unless you allow them. To use Shifter in Incognito windows in Chrome, Brave or Opera, open the extension’s details on the extensions page and turn on Allow in Incognito. In Firefox, open about:addons, select Shifter and set Run in Private Windows to Allow.

Update the extension

The browser updates the extension automatically from the store. You do not need to do anything.

Remove the extension

Right-click the Shifter icon and choose Remove from Chrome or Remove Extension, or click Remove on the Shifter card on the extensions page (about:addons in Firefox). Your browser goes back to its own connection, and the API key stored by the extension is deleted with it.
