Shifter’s free web proxy is now generally available. Shifter Web Proxy now opens websites through residential IPs in 120 countries, up from 54 at launch. The time limit is gone, there is no daily data allowance to watch, and everything else about it has been upgraded for daily use. It is still free, with no signup, no ads and nothing to install.

When we introduced Shifter’s free web proxy earlier this month, it ran with a short daily allowance while we watched how people used it. People used it for price checks across markets, previews of geo-targeted pages and news sites from abroad. Those first weeks showed us how people use it, so the limits come off and the map gets bigger.

What changes today

  • 120 countries instead of 54. We added 66 exit countries, from the Caribbean and Central America to Central Asia, the Gulf and Africa. The full list, with a page for each country, is at the end of this post.
  • No time limit. Sessions are no longer cut off after a fixed number of minutes. Browse until you are done.
  • No daily data allowance to watch. Load pages, follow links and compare markets without keeping an eye on a meter.
  • Generally available. The web proxy is now a fully supported Shifter product, running on the same residential network our paying customers use.

What stays the same: it is free, it needs no account or email address, it shows no ads, and nothing gets installed. You complete a quick reCAPTCHA check once before a session starts, which keeps bots from using up a network that real visitors share.

Why more countries matter

Websites decide a lot from your IP address: the language and currency they show, the prices and catalogue you see, the articles that are available and whether they answer at all. A web proxy is only as useful as the list of places it can put you in, and a list that stops at the biggest markets leaves out most of the questions people actually ask.

With 120 countries you can check how a Dominican travel site prices a hotel for locals, read a Kenyan news site the way readers in Nairobi see it, compare a store’s offers in Qatar and Kuwait, or confirm that your own geo redirect sends visitors in Uruguay to the right page. Proxy by country used to mean a paid plan for most of these places. Now it starts in a browser tab.

Every exit is a residential IP, a real home internet connection from a consumer provider. Most free web proxies route visitors through rented datacenter servers that websites recognize and block. In the tests behind our web proxy reviews, every competitor exit we could observe sat on a hosting network, while Shifter’s exits came from consumer internet providers. That is why pages load the way locals see them instead of as a block page or an endless CAPTCHA.

A free proxy with no time limit

Most free web proxies ration you. Some cut a session after a few minutes, some stop after a small amount of traffic, and many fill the gap with ads. In the first weeks we ran a daily allowance too, because we wanted to see real usage before we opened the doors.

That allowance is gone. A free proxy with no time limit means you can keep a long article open, compare prices across a dozen markets in one sitting, or come back to the same site later in the day without planning around a meter.

A few things are still true of any web proxy, ours included. It covers the tab you browse in, not your whole device. Streaming services and sites with heavy sign-in flows may not work through it. And anything you type into a website, such as a name or an email address, still identifies you to that site. If you want the background on how browser-based proxies work and where they stop, read our guide to how a free web proxy works.

How to use it

  1. Open the web proxy and enter a website. Type or paste any address. You do not need to add the https part.
  2. Pick a country. Choose any of the 120 exit countries, or keep the default, the United States.
  3. Browse in a new tab. Select Browse, complete the quick check, and the site opens in its own tab with back, forward, reload, an address bar and a country switcher.

You can also start from a country page. Each one opens the web proxy already set to that country, so bookmark the ones you use most.

When you need more than one browser tab

The free web proxy is the easiest way to see a website from another country. It is not built for software. When a scraper, a monitoring job, an app or your own browser profile needs local IPs, use the network behind the web proxy directly:

  • Rotating residential proxies give you the full residential network with country, city and ASN targeting and IP rotation, billed per GB. They suit price monitoring, SERP and ad checks and large-scale data collection.
  • Static ISP proxies keep the same IP from a real internet provider for as long as you need it, billed per IP. They suit account work, long sessions and anything that should look like one steady visitor.

Both plans work with the browsers, scrapers and tools you already use, and both come from the same network that powers the free web proxy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shifter Web Proxy still free now that it is generally available?

Yes. It stays free, with no signup, no email address, no ads and nothing to install. You complete a quick reCAPTCHA check once before a session starts, and then you browse.

Is there a time limit or a daily data limit?

No. The time limit from the launch period is gone, and there is no daily data allowance to watch. Open a session, pick a country and browse for as long as you need.

Which countries does the free web proxy cover?

It exits from residential IPs in 120 countries across North America, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Central, South and East Asia, Africa and Oceania. Every country has its own page, so you can bookmark the one you use most.

Can I switch country in the middle of a session?

Yes. Use the country switcher in the toolbar of the browsing tab. Changing country starts a fresh session with the website, so a site you were signed into may ask you to sign in again.

When should I use a paid proxy plan instead?

The web proxy covers one browser tab. When you need proxies inside your own browser, apps, scrapers or scripts, with city and ASN targeting, rotation or static IPs, use a residential or ISP proxy plan from Shifter.
