Free web proxy reviews, scored from facts and tests
We run a free web proxy ourselves, so these scores are calculated rather than awarded: the same rubric, the same published facts and the same scripted test for every proxy, ours included.
Shifter Web Proxy Review
The only free web proxy we found that exits through residential IPs and lets you pick from 54 countries, with no ads. The trade-off is a firm daily allowance.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 54 listed
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 0
CroxyProxy Review
CroxyProxy is quick to start and loaded every page in our test, including a JavaScript app and a login form. It gives you no country choice, YouTube would not play in our check, and its own privacy policy records your IP and the pages you visit for up to 60 days.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 2
ProxySite.com Review
ProxySite is one of the quickest free web proxies we timed, and both of its server regions sent us where they promised. It only offers the US or the EU, YouTube failed in our test, and we could not find a privacy policy that says what it keeps.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 2 listed, 2 of 2 verified
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 4
Proxyium Review
Proxyium is a dependable free proxy for everyday pages: every test page loaded and its Poland/France and US servers exited where they said. YouTube would not play in our check, the homepage is full of ads despite promising otherwise, and the site names no operator and publishes no logging policy.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 3 listed, 2 of 2 verified
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 2
BlockAway Review
BlockAway works well for ordinary pages: all ten test loads succeeded and a JavaScript app ran fine. It is CroxyProxy under another name, so it shares that platform's lack of country choice and ad-funded model, and YouTube would not play in our check.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 2
hide.me Free Proxy Review
hide.me's free web proxy is one of the cleanest and the fastest one we tested: no third-party ads, no ad-network requests and a published no-log statement from a named company. The catch is reach. It refused the BBC and YouTube outright, and it only offers three European countries.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 3 listed, 3 of 3 verified
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 0
ProxyPal Review
ProxyPal is quick and reliable: every test page loaded, at one of the better median times in our benchmark, and with less ad code loading than on CroxyProxy, ProxySite, Proxyium or BlockAway. You cannot choose a country, YouTube would not play in our check, and the free tool exited on a hosting IP even though its parent company sells residential proxies.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 1
VPNBook Web Proxy Review
VPNBook's web proxy does what it says on its short list: the US, UK and Canada buttons really exit in those countries, and it adds no visible ads to the pages you open. It was among the slower proxies in our test, failed every load of the simplest page we tried and did not play YouTube, so it suits a quick look from one of three countries more than regular use.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 3 listed, 3 of 3 verified
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 5
CoProxy Free Web Proxy Review
CoProxy's free web proxy is one of the cleaner ones we tested: every test page loaded, at a good pace, with no calls to ad networks at all and one ad slot per page that stayed empty in our automated browser. The limits are that you cannot choose where you browse from (our session exited in Poland on a hosting network), YouTube did not play, and a terms-of-use box interrupts the first page.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 0
4everproxy Review
4everproxy is quick, loaded every test page and offers the longest location list of the classic free proxies, and most of those locations really exit where they say. The price is advertising: it added as many ad slots to proxied pages as any proxy we tested and called ad networks more often than any other, and YouTube asked us to prove we were not a bot.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 21 listed, 18 of 20 verified
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 22
ProxyOrb Review
ProxyOrb is one of the few free proxies that got a YouTube video playing in our test, and it opened most of the pages we tried. Everything else about the session worked against it: a "Free VIP Upgrade" dialog asking us to share the site appeared before every page, loads were the slowest we measured, the JavaScript app never rendered and ads ran on the landing page and inside the session.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 10
911Proxy Web Proxy Review
911Proxy's free web proxy worked better than its branding suggests: every test page loaded, YouTube played both times, the JavaScript app worked and we counted no ads inside the session. It is slow, though, and it sits on a page titled after CroxyProxy while being run by 911Proxy, a residential proxy seller, which is worth knowing before you trust it with anything.
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 0
Hidester Review
The Hidester you find today is hidester.one, not the original service, and its operator is not named. In our test it loaded every page, but it was one of the slowest proxies we measured, it offers no choice of country and YouTube videos did not play.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 0
ProxFree Review
ProxFree is one of the best-behaved free web proxies we tested: every page loaded, YouTube played and we saw no ads at all. Its limits are a short list of three locations, all on hosting networks rather than home connections, and little published information about who runs it or what it logs.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 3 listed, 3 of 3 verified
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 0
LumiProxy Online Proxy Review
LumiProxy's free online proxy does more than its borrowed page names suggest: every page loaded, YouTube played, there were no ads, and the six locations we spot-checked from its list of 199 all exited where promised. It was slow, though, and every exit we saw was a hosting network, not the residential IPs LumiProxy sells.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- 199 listed, 6 of 6 verified
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 0
KProxy Review
We could not test KProxy: its site failed to load at every attempt, with a certificate error on kproxy.com and timeouts on www.kproxy.com. Going by TechRadar's review, the free tier offers two countries, disconnects periodically and logs a lot, with more countries in a paid Pro plan.
UnblockVideos Review
UnblockVideos did not work in our test. Its landing page loaded cleanly with no ads, but the proxy server behind it refused the connection on every page we tried, YouTube included, so we could not open a single site through it.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
GenMirror Review
GenMirror is quick on simple pages, among the fastest proxies we timed, and it claims to log nothing. But it is a basic proxy: 4 of our 10 test loads failed, YouTube sent us to a parked domain, modern JavaScript sites broke, and Google ad code loaded on every page we opened.
- Countries listed / verified in our test:
- No location choice
- Ad-network requests per page:
- 4
How these scores are built
Six criteria, each normalised across every free web proxy we track plus our own. Speed, ads inside proxied pages and site compatibility come from a scripted browsing session; countries, landing page ads, free allowance and privacy come from what each proxy publishes. A criterion with no data is left out and the others are scaled up.
Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session. Countries are scored on a log scale, because a jump from 3 to 20 countries matters far more to a visitor than one from 100 to 200, and only countries with residential exits count: every exit we observed is classified by its network, consumer ISP or hosting provider. Ads are scored on three parts: ads on the landing page (25%), ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty (45%) and ad-network code loaded while you browse, seen or not (30%). Any ad-network request caps that part at 6 out of 10.
