CoProxy Free Web Proxy Review

CoProxy's free web proxy is one of the cleaner ones we tested: every test page loaded, at a good pace, with no calls to ad networks at all and one ad slot per page that stayed empty in our automated browser. The limits are that you cannot choose where you browse from (our session exited in Poland on a hosting network), YouTube did not play, and a terms-of-use box interrupts the first page.

The short version

  • 10 of 10 test loads succeeded, at a median of 2,360 ms, mid-pack in the field.
  • One ad slot per proxied page, and no ad-network requests on the landing page or inside proxied pages.
  • No location picker: our session exited in Poland, on the network of the hosting company OVH.
  • YouTube's page loaded but the video did not play; the React test app worked once its terms box was accepted.

What we measured

Results from the scripted browsing session every proxy in this series goes through. Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session.

What CoProxy Free Web Proxy is

CoProxy is a proxy seller (residential, mobile and datacenter), and the free web proxy is a tool page on its own domain, coproxy.io/tools/free-web-proxy. It is a tidy page: a search box that takes a link or a search query, an "I'm Feeling Lucky" button and a row of quick links to big sites such as Google, YouTube and TikTok. The copy frames it for business uses such as competitor intelligence.

The page does try to sell. When we tested it, a chat-style box from CoProxy offered 10% off premium proxies, and the header leads to its paid plans, which start at GBP 0.52 per GB for rotating residential traffic according to its site. There is no AdSense: the free tool is a showcase for the paid network, much as Shifter Web Proxy is for ours.

How it performed in our test

Over five targets loaded twice each, CoProxy got through 10 of 10 attempts, with a median of 2,360 ms, which put it mid-pack in the field. Times were steady, with most pages landing within a few hundred milliseconds of each other; only the YouTube page took noticeably longer.

The proxied pages do not open on coproxy.io. They opened on a separate domain, learnbridge.institute, with the target address encoded in the URL. That is a common design for web proxies, but it is worth knowing if you check the address bar and wonder where you are.

On the first proxied page CoProxy shows a "Proxy terms of use" box over the site, which has to be accepted before you can type into the page. Our script pressed "I agree", as a visitor would. After that the TodoMVC React app worked normally, and the GitHub login form displayed all its fields. Signing in was never attempted, so we cannot speak to staying logged in.

YouTube did not play. The watch page and player loaded, YouTube's EU consent wall appeared and was dismissed, but the video never started in either load. CoProxy's quick link to YouTube suggests otherwise, so do not count on it for video.

There is no location picker on the free tool. The exit we recorded was a Polish address on OVH, a hosting company. IP type was not formally classified, so the table shows it as not measured, but an OVH address is not one of the residential IPs CoProxy sells.

Ads were the bright spot. Proxied pages carry one ad slot, in the bar above the site, which stayed empty in our automated browser. We saw no pop-ups or interstitials and no requests to ad networks on the landing page or during browsing. Several proxies in our test loaded ad code while you browse; CoProxy did not.

Is CoProxy safe?

CoProxy is a named proxy provider, the tool runs over HTTPS, and it made no ad-network requests in our test. That is a cleaner start than most free proxies.

The terms box shown inside proxied pages contains privacy policy text, but the part we saw is generic and does not say whether the free proxy records the pages you visit, and we found no separate logging statement for the tool. Its logging therefore counts as not disclosed. Because pages are served from a third domain, keep it to public sites and avoid entering passwords or payment details through it.

Who it suits

CoProxy's free web proxy suits someone who wants to open an ordinary page through another IP with little advertising and does not care which country it comes from. It is also a fair first look if you are already considering CoProxy's paid proxies.

It is not built for country-specific checks, since you cannot pick the location, and it did not play YouTube. If you need to choose the country, Shifter Web Proxy offers 54 countries of residential IPs with no ads, within a free allowance of 30 minutes and 100 MB a day and a reCAPTCHA before each session.

Who CoProxy Free Web Proxy is for

Use it if
  • You want to open public pages through another IP with little advertising.
  • You do not need a specific country.
  • You are evaluating CoProxy's paid proxies and want a quick preview.
Look elsewhere if
  • You need to see a site from a particular country.
  • You want to watch YouTube through a web proxy.
  • You want a published statement on what the free tool logs.

How we scored it

Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session. Countries are scored on a log scale, because a jump from 3 to 20 countries matters far more to a visitor than one from 100 to 200, and only countries with residential exits count: every exit we observed is classified by its network, consumer ISP or hosting provider. Ads are scored on three parts: ads on the landing page (25%), ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty (45%) and ad-network code loaded while you browse, seen or not (30%). Any ad-network request caps that part at 6 out of 10.

Every criterion is calculated from published facts or our own measurements and normalised across all the free web proxies we track, Shifter included. Nothing is scored by hand, so a proxy that beats ours on a criterion scores higher on it.

  • Speed measured
    Weight 22% 8/10

2360 ms median page load against 16 proxies we timed, multiplied by the 100% of test pages that loaded.

  • Countries measured
    Weight 17% 0/10

Every exit we observed was on a hosting or cloud provider's network, so none count as residential. Log scale against the widest residential choice in the field (54).

  • Ads measured
    Weight 22% 7.9/10

Landing page ads: no. Ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty: 1. Ad-network requests per proxied page: 0.

  • Compatibility measured
    Weight 22% 5/10

Passed 1 of 2 checks (YouTube playback, staying logged in, a JavaScript app).

  • Privacy
    Weight 17% 5/10

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about CoProxy Free Web Proxy.

It ran over HTTPS, showed no ad (its one ad slot per page stayed empty) and made no ad-network requests in our test, and it is run by a named proxy company. Its free tool does not say whether it logs the pages you visit, and pages open on a separate domain, so use it for public sites rather than logins or payments.

Not in our test. The YouTube page and player loaded in both attempts, but the video did not start. Other pages, including a JavaScript app, worked fine.

No. The free tool has no location picker. Our session exited from Poland on the network of OVH, a hosting company.

It appears over the first proxied page and must be accepted before you can type into the site. Pressing "I agree" removes it. Our script did the same and the pages worked afterwards.

Yes. There is no signup and CoProxy publishes no limit for the free tool. It is a showcase for CoProxy's paid residential, mobile and datacenter proxies, which are billed separately.

If you need to pick the country, Shifter Web Proxy offers 54 countries of residential IPs with no ads, capped at 30 minutes and 100 MB a day. If you want YouTube, ProxFree and 911Proxy both played our test video. hide.me was the fastest proxy we measured and made no ad-network requests.
