GenMirror Review
GenMirror is quick on simple pages, among the fastest proxies we timed, and it claims to log nothing. But it is a basic proxy: 4 of our 10 test loads failed, YouTube sent us to a parked domain, modern JavaScript sites broke, and Google ad code loaded on every page we opened.
The short version
- Fast where it worked: a median of 1,022 ms, second only to hide.me among the proxies we timed, measured on the lighter pages that loaded.
- Only 6 of 10 test loads worked: the BBC came up blank, and the YouTube link redirected to ytmirror.com, a domain listed for sale.
- Two ad slots were added to each proxied page, a median of 4 requests per page went to Google ad networks, and the landing page shows AdSense.
- No location choice; our exit was a Hetzner IP in Germany. GenMirror says nothing is logged, a claim we cannot verify.

What we measured
Results from the scripted browsing session every proxy in this series goes through. Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session.

What GenMirror is
GenMirror is a simple SSL web proxy at genmirror.com. The home page has an address box, quick links to seven popular sites from Facebook to Imgur, and menus labelled "Manage Cookies", "Edit Browser" and "Proxy List". Proxied pages open under a slim GenMirror bar with its own address box and a cookies link.
It is funded by advertising: the landing page carries Google AdSense, and from our EU connection a Google consent dialog appeared first. The site does not name its operator. On its own pages it states that nothing is logged.
How it performed in our test
GenMirror went through the same five targets, twice each, plus the JavaScript app and an exit IP lookup.
When pages loaded, they loaded fast. example.com and the Wikipedia article appeared in about a second, and the GitHub sign-in form rendered too. The median of 1,022 ms put GenMirror second only to hide.me. That number flatters it a little, though, because it only covers the pages that worked, and those were the lighter ones.
Four of the ten loads failed. The BBC home page came up as a blank white page in both runs. The YouTube link did not proxy YouTube at all: GenMirror sent us to ytmirror.com, which showed a parked page saying the domain may be for sale. The Wikipedia article loaded but without its styles, as a plain list of links and text, which suggests the proxy strips or fails to rewrite parts of the page. The JavaScript test app (TodoMVC) did not render in either run.
On ads, GenMirror adds two ad slots below the site on each proxied page, a Connatix video player and an outstream ad unit; both stayed empty in our automated browser. We saw no pop-ups, and every page made requests to Google's ad networks, a median of 4 per page.
Location and exit IP
There is no location picker on the free proxy. Our exit IP was in Germany, on Hetzner, a large hosting company, so sites see a datacenter visitor rather than a home connection. The site has a "Proxy List" menu, but we found no way to change the exit country on this proxy.
Is GenMirror safe?
GenMirror runs over HTTPS and says on its own site that nothing is logged, which is more than many free proxies state. It is still a claim from an operator it does not name, and we have no way to check it.
The redirect from its YouTube link to a parked domain is a small but real concern: a link on a proxy's own home page should not lead to a domain that is for sale and could change hands. Combined with Google ad code on every proxied page, we would use GenMirror for casual reading only, and never sign in to accounts through it.
Who it suits
GenMirror suits quick looks at simple, mostly static pages, where its speed shines and broken styling does not matter much. It is a poor fit for video, modern web apps or picking a country. If you need a choice of location and a home IP, Shifter Web Proxy offers 54 countries through residential IPs with no ads or ad code, run by a named company, within a free allowance of 30 minutes and 100 MB a day.
Pros and cons
- Very fast on the pages that loaded
- Says nothing is logged
- HTTPS, no signup, handy quick links

- The YouTube link redirected to a parked domain
- The JavaScript test app failed, and Wikipedia lost its styling
- Two ad slots and Google ad code on every proxied page
- No location choice; our exit was a hosting IP in Germany
- Operator not named
Who GenMirror is for
- You want to open a simple article or static page quickly.
- You do not mind pages losing some of their styling.
- You want to watch YouTube or use modern JavaScript sites.
- You need a specific country or a residential IP.
- You want a proxy that loads no ad code at all.
How we scored it
Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session. Countries are scored on a log scale, because a jump from 3 to 20 countries matters far more to a visitor than one from 100 to 200, and only countries with residential exits count: every exit we observed is classified by its network, consumer ISP or hosting provider. Ads are scored on three parts: ads on the landing page (25%), ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty (45%) and ad-network code loaded while you browse, seen or not (30%). Any ad-network request caps that part at 6 out of 10.
Every criterion is calculated from published facts or our own measurements and normalised across all the free web proxies we track, Shifter included. Nothing is scored by hand, so a proxy that beats ours on a criterion scores higher on it.
- Speed measuredWeight 22% 5.9/10
1022 ms median page load against 16 proxies we timed, multiplied by the 60% of test pages that loaded.
- Countries measuredWeight 17% 0/10
Every exit we observed was on a hosting or cloud provider's network, so none count as residential. Log scale against the widest residential choice in the field (54).
- Ads measuredWeight 22% 2.7/10
Landing page ads: yes. Ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty: 2. Ad-network requests per proxied page: 4.
- Compatibility measuredWeight 22% 0/10
Passed 0 of 2 checks (YouTube playback, staying logged in, a JavaScript app).
- PrivacyWeight 17% 7/10
Operator named: no. Logging: states it does not log browsing. HTTPS to the proxy: yes.
