GenMirror is a simple SSL web proxy with a handy set of quick links to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google, Reddit, Wikipedia and Imgur. It has menus to manage cookies and edit browser settings, and it says on its own site that nothing is logged. For a fast, no-frills way to open a page through someone else's server, it is easy to use.
What it does not tell you clearly is where that server is, or who runs it. Its free tool has no location picker (there is a "Proxy List" menu, but no country choice), and in our test it exited in Germany through Hetzner, a hosting company. Its operator is not disclosed, its landing page carries Google AdSense, and in the same test BBC and YouTube did not load through it. If the reason you use a proxy is to see a site as a visitor in a particular country would, or simply to browse without ads, those gaps matter.
Shifter Web Proxy lets you choose from 54 countries, routes every session through a residential IP and shows no ads anywhere. It is run by Shifter, a proxy company, and has a firm free allowance of 30 minutes and 100 MB per visitor per day.

Why people switch from GenMirror
Choose the country you browse from
GenMirror's free tool has no location picker; our test session exited in Germany. Shifter Web Proxy lets you pick from 54 and switch from the toolbar mid-session, so you see local prices, search results and content for the market you chose.
No ads anywhere
GenMirror pays for itself with Google AdSense on its landing page and ad slots on the pages you open through it. Shifter has nothing to sell you on the launcher or in the browsing tab apart from its own proxy plans, so there is no ad slot to fill.
A named operator behind the privacy promise
GenMirror says nothing is logged, but it does not say who is making that promise. Shifter Web Proxy is run by Shifter, which states that it does not log the pages you visit and only keeps an anonymous, hashed counter for the daily allowance.
Residential IPs
GenMirror's exit in our test was a Hetzner hosting IP. Every Shifter session exits through a residential IP, the kind large sites generally treat as an ordinary home visitor. That makes a page more likely to load the way a local visitor in that country sees it.
A clear path when you need more
When the free tool is not enough, Shifter's residential and ISP proxy plans run on the same network, with city and ISP targeting and use in your own apps and scripts.
Open about the trade-off
GenMirror publishes no free limit. Shifter does: 30 minutes and 100 MB per visitor per day, with a reCAPTCHA check before each session. It is smaller than an ad-funded proxy may allow, and it is how residential IPs stay free and ad-free.
