ProxySite.com is one of the most visited free proxy sites. Its appeal is simple: paste a link, pick a server and the page opens. The server list is long, with twenty servers marked US and twenty marked EU, and the site has quick links for YouTube, Reddit, Facebook and Google plus an interface in 16 languages.
The catch is in that list. Forty servers still add up to two regions. You can choose the United States or the European Union, but not Germany over France, and nothing outside those two regions at all. If you are checking a price in Japan, a search result in Brazil or an ad in Mexico, ProxySite has no server that puts you there.
That is the gap Shifter Web Proxy fills. You choose from 54 countries, and the page loads through a residential IP in the one you picked, so the site sees an ordinary local visitor. There are no ads and no account. The free allowance is 30 minutes and 100 MB a day, so it is built for checks rather than all-day browsing.

Why people switch from ProxySite.com
A country, not a region
ProxySite's servers are labelled US and EU, nothing more specific. Shifter lists 54 countries by name, so a page localized for Spain, Canada or India shows you what a visitor there sees, not a generic European or American version.
Coverage beyond the US and Europe
ProxySite has no option in Asia, Latin America, Africa or Oceania. Shifter adds countries across Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, which matters for checking regional pricing, app store listings, localized search results and ads that only run in one market.
Residential IPs that sites treat as local
A numbered server in a shared pool is easy for big sites to spot. Shifter sends each session out through a household connection in the country you picked, so a retailer or search engine sees what looks like a local customer. ProxySite does not say its servers are residential, and in our test its US server exited through tzulo and its EU server through OVH in France, both hosting networks.
Nothing on the page is an ad
ProxySite's homepage runs Google AdSense. Shifter Web Proxy carries no ads anywhere in the flow, because our paid residential and ISP proxy plans fund it.
A published privacy stance
We could not find a privacy policy for ProxySite, so we cannot tell you what it keeps. Shifter's gateway keeps no log of the pages you visit, only a hashed anonymous token and the counters for your daily allowance.
An upgrade with published terms
ProxySite points to a MyProxySite account but does not publish what it costs or includes. Shifter's next step is its residential and ISP proxy plans, listed with prices on the pricing page and offering city and ISP targeting for longer or automated work.
ProxySite.com pros and cons
- Long-established, with quick links to popular sites
- Forty servers to fall back on if one is busy
- Interface in 16 languages and an HTTPS connection to the proxy
- No published daily time or data cap
- Both regions exited where labelled in our test
- Two regions only, United States or European Union, with no country choice
- AdSense ads on the homepage
- YouTube showed a "Content Unavailable" page in both of our test loads
- No privacy policy we could find, and we could not check the MyProxySite account terms
Verdict
If any American or European IP will do and you want to browse for hours, ProxySite remains a workable free option. If you need a specific country, or one outside the US and Europe, Shifter Web Proxy covers 54 countries on residential IPs, within a daily allowance of 30 minutes and 100 MB.
