Hidester Review
The Hidester you find today is hidester.one, not the original service, and its operator is not named. In our test it loaded every page, but it was one of the slowest proxies we measured, it offers no choice of country and YouTube videos did not play.
The short version
- hidester.com now redirects to vpncentral.com; the proxy behind the name is hidester.one, run by an operator it does not disclose.
- Reliable but slow in our test: all 10 proxied pages loaded, with a median of 7,781 ms, second slowest of the proxies we timed.
- One ad slot added to each page we opened, empty in our automated browser, and no ad-network requests during browsing; the hidester.one content page itself carries AdSense.
- No location picker: our exit IP was a hosting address in Poland, and we found no statement on what it logs.

What we measured
Results from the scripted browsing session every proxy in this series goes through. Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session.

What Hidester is today
Hidester was once a well-known free web proxy. The old hidester.com address simply forwarded visitors to vpncentral.com; no proxy runs there now. The traffic for the name now goes to hidester.one, a separate site that uses the Hidester name but is not the company behind the original service.
hidester.one is a content page carrying AdSense and a "Click here to use Proxy" button, which opens the actual tool on a hidester.one subdomain, a plain page with an address box, quick links to sites such as YouTube, Reddit and Wikipedia, and a footer that reads "Made with Reflect4", which points to a ready-made proxy script rather than a service built in-house. Neither page names the people who run it.
This review is about that working proxy, because it is what you get when you search for Hidester now. If you are looking for the original Hidester, it is gone.
How it performed in our test
Hidester got the standard treatment: each of our five target pages twice, the TodoMVC app and one exit IP lookup.
Reliability was good. All 10 page loads passed their content checks, including the BBC home page and the GitHub sign-in form, which some proxies in this series failed. The trade-off was speed: the median load was 7,781 ms, and every page, even the tiny example.com, took several seconds. Only ProxyOrb was slower among the proxies we timed. YouTube was the slowest page of all.
The YouTube watch page rendered with its player, but the video did not start in either run, so we record YouTube playback as a fail. The JavaScript test app (TodoMVC) worked once we pressed "I agree" on a "Proxy terms of use" box that Hidester puts in front of the first page, which a visitor has to do too.
Inside the proxied pages we found one ad slot per page, in the bar above the site, which stayed empty in our automated browser, with no pop-ups and zero ad-network requests. The proxy page itself showed no ads. The ads sit one step earlier, on the hidester.one content page that most visitors land on first.
Location and exit IP
There is no location picker on the free tool. Our exit IP check came out in Poland, on an address belonging to OVH, a large hosting company. That is a hosting network, not a home connection, so sites that treat hosting addresses with suspicion are more likely to show CAPTCHAs or block pages.
If you need to see a site as a visitor in a particular country would, Hidester cannot help, because you cannot choose. We checked the exit once, so we cannot say whether it ever changes.
Is Hidester safe?
We cannot call it unsafe, but we also cannot tell you much about it, and that is the problem. hidester.one does not name its operator. The proxy page links to terms of use and a privacy policy, but we did not review those pages and nothing else we read says what it keeps, so we treat its logging as not disclosed. Whatever you open through Hidester travels through servers run by someone you cannot identify.
The proxy is served over HTTPS, which protects the connection between you and the proxy. It does not protect what you type from the proxy itself. Do not sign in to email, banking or anything sensitive through it, or through any web proxy whose owner you cannot name.
Who it suits
Hidester works for quick, low-stakes reading: opening an article or a page that is blocked on your network, where location does not matter and a few seconds' wait is fine. It is less suited to anything location-specific, to video or to signing in. If you need a choice of country, Shifter Web Proxy lets you pick from 54 countries on residential IPs, ad-free and from a company that names itself, for up to 30 minutes and 100 MB a day.
Pros and cons
- Every test page loaded, including the BBC and the GitHub sign-in form
- No ad-network requests during browsing
- No signup and nothing to install
- Served over HTTPS
- The JavaScript test app worked
- Slow: second slowest of the proxies we timed
- Unrelated to the original Hidester, and run by an unnamed operator
- No location choice; our exit was a hosting IP in Poland
- YouTube videos did not play in our test
- No logging statement we could find
- AdSense on the hidester.one page most visitors land on
Who Hidester is for
- You want to open a blocked article or page and do not care which country it comes from.
- You value pages loading completely over pages loading fast.
- You want a proxy that adds no ads to the sites you open.
- You need a specific country, or a home (residential) IP.
- You want to watch YouTube or other video.
- You need to know who operates the proxy and what it logs.
How we scored it
Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session. Countries are scored on a log scale, because a jump from 3 to 20 countries matters far more to a visitor than one from 100 to 200, and only countries with residential exits count: every exit we observed is classified by its network, consumer ISP or hosting provider. Ads are scored on three parts: ads on the landing page (25%), ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty (45%) and ad-network code loaded while you browse, seen or not (30%). Any ad-network request caps that part at 6 out of 10.
Every criterion is calculated from published facts or our own measurements and normalised across all the free web proxies we track, Shifter included. Nothing is scored by hand, so a proxy that beats ours on a criterion scores higher on it.
- Speed measuredWeight 22% 0.8/10
7781 ms median page load against 16 proxies we timed, multiplied by the 100% of test pages that loaded.
- Countries measuredWeight 17% 0/10
Every exit we observed was on a hosting or cloud provider's network, so none count as residential. Log scale against the widest residential choice in the field (54).
- Ads measuredWeight 22% 5.4/10
Landing page ads: yes. Ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty: 1. Ad-network requests per proxied page: 0.
- Compatibility measuredWeight 22% 5/10
Passed 1 of 2 checks (YouTube playback, staying logged in, a JavaScript app).
- PrivacyWeight 17% 2/10
Operator named: no. Logging: no policy published. HTTPS to the proxy: yes.
