Shifter Web Proxy Review
The only free web proxy we found that exits through residential IPs and lets you pick from 54 countries, with no ads. The trade-off is a firm daily allowance.
The short version
- Residential exit IPs in 54 countries, picked by you, where the big free proxies offer two or three datacenter regions.
- No ads on the page or inside the sites you visit, no account and nothing to install.
- A firm cap of 30 minutes and 100 MB a day per visitor.
- Built by a proxy company as a way to try its network, which is where the upgrade path leads.

What we measured
Our own run of the same scripted browsing session every proxy in this series goes through. Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session.

What it is
Shifter Web Proxy is a browser-based proxy: you enter an address, choose a country and the site opens in a new tab, fetched through Shifter's residential proxy network. It runs entirely in the page, so there is no extension or app.
We built it as a free way to try the same residential IPs our customers buy, which is also why we review it here alongside the proxies it competes with. The score below is produced by the same function as every other review in this series, from the same kinds of data.
Where it is strong
Residential exit IPs are the main difference. Most free web proxies route everyone through a handful of rented servers, and large websites recognize those addresses and answer with CAPTCHAs or block pages. A residential IP belongs to a home broadband line, so sites generally treat the visit as an ordinary local one.
Country choice is the second. You pick from 54 countries and can switch from the toolbar while browsing, where CroxyProxy, ProxySite and Proxyium offer at most a few regions.
There are no ads anywhere in the flow, and the service does not log the pages you visit. For HTTPS sites the encrypted connection is negotiated inside your browser tab.
Where it falls short
The free allowance is capped at 30 minutes and 100 MB a day per visitor, and it does not reset when you end a session or change country. Proxies funded by ads usually set no published cap, which is why we score lower than some of them on that criterion.
The proxy picks the exit IP within the country. City and internet provider targeting are only available on paid residential and ISP plans.
Pros and cons
- Residential IPs in 54 countries
- No ads, no pop-ups, no signup
- Country switch from the toolbar without a new check
- No log of the pages you visit
- Opens in its own tab with back, forward and reload
- Daily cap of 30 minutes and 100 MB
- No city or ISP choice on the free tool
Who Shifter Web Proxy is for
- You want to see a site exactly as a local visitor in another country sees it.
- You keep running into CAPTCHAs or block pages on datacenter-based free proxies.
- You need quick, occasional checks of prices, ads or search results abroad.
- You want hours of browsing or video every day for free.
- You need a specific city, ISP or the same IP over several days.
- You want to route a whole device or an app rather than a browser tab.
How we scored it
Measured from a single connection in the EU, using test method wpb-1.1. Every proxy ran the same scripted session. Countries are scored on a log scale, because a jump from 3 to 20 countries matters far more to a visitor than one from 100 to 200, and only countries with residential exits count: every exit we observed is classified by its network, consumer ISP or hosting provider. Ads are scored on three parts: ads on the landing page (25%), ad slots added to proxied pages, filled or empty (45%) and ad-network code loaded while you browse, seen or not (30%). Any ad-network request caps that part at 6 out of 10.
Every criterion is calculated from published facts or our own measurements and normalised across all the free web proxies we track, Shifter included. Nothing is scored by hand, so a proxy that beats ours on a criterion scores higher on it.

1287 ms median page load against 16 proxies we timed, multiplied by the 100% of test pages that loaded.
